Our Objectives
The African Center for Science, Technology and International Security (AFRICSIS) was created in response to a growing need for African-led expertise at the intersection of science, emerging technologies, and international security. As global security threats became more complex—shaped by nuclear science, biotechnology, space capabilities, and other dual-use innovations—it became clear that Africa needed its own dedicated institution to study these challenges and develop tailored, evidence-based solutions.
AFRICSIS was established by a group of scholars and practitioners committed to strengthening Africa’s voice in global security dialogues. Their goal was to build a center that could combine rigorous research, technical knowledge, and independent policy analysis to support African governments, institutions, and communities.
From its early years, AFRICSIS focused on promoting non-proliferation, nuclear security, and the safe, peaceful use of scientific technologies across the continent. Over time, its work expanded to include biosecurity, chemical safety, space applications, cybersecurity, and other emerging fields.
Through partnerships with universities, international organizations, scientific institutions, and policy networks, AFRICSIS has grown into a respected hub for capacity building, research, and strategic dialogue. Today, it continues to play a key role in empowering African policymakers, scientists, journalists, and young leaders to respond effectively to evolving security challenges and to shape a safer, more stable, and more technologically advanced Africa.
