SUMMARY:Intensive Course on WMD Nonproliferation and Security for Women in 
 STEM in Africa
DESCRIPTION:The James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) and 
 the Middlebury Institute of International Studies (MIIS) in Monterey (Calif
 ornia\, USA)\, in partnership with the African Centre for Science and Inter
 national Security\, or AFRICSIS (Accra\, Ghana)\, will offer an intensive
  online course on “WMD Nonproliferation and Security for Women in STEM (S
 cience\, Technology\, Engineering\, and Mathematics)” for university prof
 essors\, researchers\, practitioners\, government officials\, and other fem
 ale professionals in Africa.\n\n\n\nThe course will be held in the online 
 format from January 25—February 5\, 2021\, in three-hour instalments on 
 Mondays–Fridays). Funding for this tuition-free course is being provided 
 by the Norwegian Government\, the Carnegie Corporation of New York\, and Th
 e John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.\n\nThe primary objective o
 f the course is to provide female technical experts\, researchers\, scienti
 sts\, and government officials with a broader understanding of weapons of m
 ass destruction nonproliferation\, arms control\, disarmament\, the peacefu
 l uses of nuclear energy\, chemical\, biological\, radiological\, and nucle
 ar security\, as well as the various institutions\, tools\, and mechanisms 
 necessary to address current nonproliferation and security challenges. The 
 course aims to support worldwide efforts in promoting women in STEM in gene
 ral and in the areas of WMD nonproliferation and security in particular. Th
 e course program will feature leading international\, regional\, and local 
 experts and practitioners from academia\, national governments\, and intern
 ational organizations.\n\nCourse participants will be awarded certificates 
 of completion.\nEligibility\nCourse organizers welcome applications from te
 chnical specialists in the energy and trade ministries\; experts in the are
 a of strategic trade\, customs\, law enforcement\, and border controls\; op
 erators and technicians from atomic commissions and regulatory bodies\; spe
 cialists from cancer treatment and other medical facilities using radioacti
 ve sources and materials\; public health officials\; and faculty and resear
 chers from academia. Specialists from other government and non-governmental
  entities will be considered as well.\n\nEligible female candidates should 
 be nationals of African countries who reside and work in Africa and are fl
 uent in English. Course instruction and all discussions will be conducted i
 n English.\n\n\n\nHow to Apply\nApplication Deadline: January 4\, 2021\nInt

 plications is January  4\, 2021\, but candidates are encouraged to apply a
